Elder Scott and 2 great Oak trees
Hey there Family!
How is everyone doing in good ol´maine on this sweet day of october?
I still can´t believe that it is october and that it is almost november. It´s weird my mind is going into shock because it is expecting another really cold winter in Maine, but in reality it is only getting hotter and hotter here each day. This Saturday our mission will have a meeting with Elder Richard G. Scott. It will only be our mission, and he should speak in Portugeuse. He already know Spanish fluently, and I think he has been able to pick up Portugeuse fairly easy. If not, being an Apostle, he could speak in tongues so that everyone could understand. My companion and I are doing great together, we still can´t believe that the transfer is almost over.
Transfers are November 3rd, and I don´t know if I will be transfered or not. I think I have a good 50 percent chance. Because this transfer a lot of elders will be going home, a lot of our District Leaders, and Zone Leaders, even our Assistant. Things should be pretty interesting next transfer. Last week I had interviews with my President, and it was really hard to speak in English with him, my english really is decaying, I can think and write okay, but speaking is very difficult. President Richardson said we can speak in Portugeuse if you want... I said no, and kept on trying. It is crazy, I never thought of speaking a second language would be so weird. It´s especially weird dreaming in Portugeuse. A few days ago I had a dream that I was done with my mission and was at home chilling. But everything was in Portugeuse, and you all were speaking in Portugeuse!!!! CRAZY!!!
I finally got mail after interviews, I got those two packages from mom, and a package from Grandma. That recipe book is crazy.
My area is progressing well. We have 2 investigators that are progressing toward baptism. They will be baptized on Halloween. They both have a solid testimony of the Book of Mormon and the Gospel. They are really excited to be baptized. We are working with another family that needs to get married before they can be baptized. Marriage is one of the biggest problems down here in Brazil. There is so much paperwork, taxes, and legal stuff to worry about. It is as if the government of Brazil down´t want people to get married. It is an uphill battle to say the least, but they have the desire, and now anything is possible.
That´s so awesome about Kimball scoring his first goal!!! Woohoo!!! Thanks kimball for the picture of the pokemon card, and the letter, I loved it!And Grant playing football, another undefeated season this year. Wow... I wish I could see both of you guys play, I guess it will just have to wait a few more months. And Jake, the ladies man. Or should I say Jusachi. So who is this girl from Massachusetts? Sounds like a lot of fun.
Dad, I have a favor to ask of you. In your next email could you send me some of your insights on making good first impressions as a leader? I am not looking to be one, but if I do have that opportunity to serve I want to serve the very best I can, and I want to start off with the right foot. I really liked your thought on King Benjamin, and being a good leader. You can really see the difference in the leaders of the mission today based on the reasons why they are serving. Whether they are serving for the ´glory of man´ or serving to serve God.
Well I need to get going, I hope everyone is doing awesome, I love you all and miss you guys even more. Time is flying by and pretty soon, I will be home living in the basement!
Love,Elder Harry Kenning
Spriritual Thought:sorry I forgot last time.... :(
Alright here we go...Imagine 2 great oak trees and a river. One oak tree is right next to the river getting an ample supply of water. The water is right there and the tree does not have to go very far to get it´s source of nourishment. The other oak tree is really far away, but it is still the same size as the first, it is still as healthy. How? This tree has dug in really deep with it´s roots to find the source of water. The roots have spread everywhere to catch every little drop of moisture. And one day there was a great storm with heavy rain and strong winds. The tree that was right next to the river fell over. Why? Because it´s roots had not dug in deep like that of the other, it did not have a strong foundation of dilligent searching for nourishment.
And so how does this story apply to us today? Lots of times we complain, oh life would be so much easier if we lived in Utah, or if the answers to our problems were right next to us. Life would be so much easier if things were handed to us on a silver platter. But in reality when the real challenges strike if we have centered our lives on Christ and dillegently searched His teachings, we can overcome them. For the prophet Ether said:Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an achor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God. And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I bgive unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.
