Here is Harrison's first email. It was handwritten so I retyped it.
Dear Family,
I apologize for my sloppy handwriting. I am on a bus on my way to the Temple. This past week has been great. I have already learned so much being out here. In addition to my 2 American roomates, I have 2 Brasilian roomates who absolutely speak no English. So we promised to teach them English if they teach us Portugese.
Today is my P-day and it will be my first to go outside the MTC. The city is so crazy. On Sunday there was a championship in soccer. The Whole city was quiet until a goal was made. The whole city unanimously cheered. Others expressed their excitement by lighting off fireworks in the middle of the road.
My companion is pretty cool. He is very quiet and not socially outgoing at all. He also has IBS. But the Lord put me with him and I will have to make the best of it. I was also made District Leader for my group. I donm't know why there are plenty of other Elders that are more capable than I am. So in addition to my MTC classes I run around to leadership meetings. But I love it here. This mission is probably the coolest mission in the whole world.
Food has been great except for a few exceptions. We had pizza night on Thursday. It was like Pizza on a tortilla! Also the chef likes to experiement with ideas. So he tried banana and chocolate pizza....but still cooked it with cheese. I tried it and almost threw up. To Brasilians there are no such things as expiration dates. Our sacrament bread was moldy, but I still ate it. I guess that is why we bless it!
Well I miss you guys, and love you so much! Thank you for your prayers and support. I can really feel them here.
Amor,
Elder Harrison Kenning
